Hanns Alexander’s army enlistment papers. In December 1939, three months after the outbreak of war, Hanns received the news that he was to be part of the recently created Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps.
Hanns Alexander’s army enlistment papers. When, on 3 September 1939, Hanns heard the news that his adopted country was at war with the country of his birth, he felt compelled to act. On 4 September 1939 Hanns and his brother Paul took a number 7 bus to the Royal Air Force recruitment office in Acton, west London. It wasn't until December 1939 that the twins received word regarding their enlistment: they were to be part of the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps and were ordered to report at once.
