The front page of Hanns Alexander’s Reisepass (passport). On 30 May 1936, Hanns arrived at the railway station in Basel, intending to meet his brother Paul on the way to join his family in England. The station was run by the German railway network, and Hanns had to queue up to present his passport before he was allowed to leave. The German officer looked at the Reisspass, comparing the man in front of him to the fifteen year old inside, glanced at the British visa, stamped a page and waved him through. Paul was waiting for him at the other side of passport control.
